Doris Spain

Born in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Doris Spain started singing in a Baptist Church at age eight. At age 18, she made her first recording (Sky High) with Bobby Mann, formerly of the Jimmy Castor Bunch. While she performed with the gospel group ‘Leola Brown’ on cable TV in New York City, she wrote and recorded her first single. Later she trained with the renowned Lillette Harris Jenkins, musical director of such noted Broadway plays as ‘One Mo Time’.

Subsequently, she performed in churches in Atlanta, Panama City and Chicago. She also performed solo in local clubs in Panama City Beach, Florida– Key West Bar & Grill, Fog Horns, etc.

Then she went on the road as part of a duo called “Speed Limit” playing in hotels from Florida to Michigan. While the duo was booked for several weeks at Harrah’s in Joliet, she took the opportunity to visit Chicago’s blues clubs and decided to remain in Chicago. Here she hooked up with Mighty Joe Young Jr., as well as with other Chicago blues figures, playing blues clubs such as Legends and Koko Taylor's.

In November of 2002, Doris Spain met Ciba Jesina at Janina’s, a Czech bar, where he was the drummer for the Czech band, Vata. They had an immediate rapport and soon after formed a partnership. Ciba had started writing his own songs (with his cousin, Alice Rivera, writing the majority of the lyrics) and Doris was looking for a new venue to showcase her talents. They were known as ‘Hot Sands’ or simply Doris & Ciba. The original material was well received and they developed a loyal fan base. These three co-founded Rhythm on 22nd as they all shared a similar vision to bring together the European sound and soulful flavors that combined became the unique sound that is the foundation of the band. Rhythm on 22nd performed at various venues in Chicago, Forest Park, the Cicero/Berwyn area, Morton Grove, Park Ridge to name a few.

In January of 2006, Doris decided it was time to explore other projects. She officially left Rhythm on 22nd but is still committed to their success (as they are committed to her success) and is featured as lead vocalist singing her song, ‘You were My Life’, on their first CD with a release date of May 4, 2007.

Currently, Ms. Spain is working solo and with various local bands in the Chicagoland area as a featured artist with the intention of forming her own band in the near future.

Doris’ influences include:
Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Bobby Womak, Sam Cooke, Barbara Streisand and Gladys Knight.
